Spring arrives in Vancouver, B.C. with a special show dedicated to floral art. The Flower Show (April 1-30, 2025) curated by Monte Clark Gallery, will take place at contemporary furniture mecca Living Space. The show, part of the larger 2025 Capture Photography Festival, will be a group exhibition featuring the photographic works of Karin Bubaš, Greg Girard, Owen Kydd and others. Says the gallery, “Each artist brings a unique perspective, merging the delicate beauty of blooms with quotidian life and narratives that examine the complexities of a human relationship to the natural world.”
North Vancouver’s Karin Bubaš, known most recently for her landscape photography combining the natural world with fashion, will show works depicting white peonies from her “Fleurs” series. Says the artist: “The Fleurs series presents 22"x28" still-life photographs of floral arrangements in vases. These works merge photography, sculpture, and craft through hand and laser-cut layers, drawing inspiration from Manet’s poignant floral paintings. By constructing each image with multiple layers of cut prints, assembled with adhesive and foam, the pieces take on a three-dimensional, pop-up quality. This technique challenges traditional perceptions of photography, emphasizing its physicality as a paper-based medium – one that can be bent, folded, and shaped into sculptural forms.” In addition, one piece from her Studies in Landscapes series will be on display. Bubaš has exhibited in Paris, Brussels and Washington, D.C. and her work has been featured in the New York Times Style section.
Canadian photographer Greg Girard will show images from his forthcoming book Snack Sakura (April 2025, Kominek Books). Featuring photography from Japan, images feature cherry blossoms (Sakura), including one of a carpet of fallen pink petals entitled Late Spring, and moody evening shots that are part of the “Night Blossoms” series. A globally known artist, the Milan Fashion Week runway show for Jil Sander’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection paid homage to Girard’s Under Vancouver series with nostalgic images from the 1970s and ’80s.
Los Angeles-based video artist Owen Kydd, who was born in Calgary, will show works such as Cherry, an illuminated photograph. Kydd’s works are housed in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the San Francisco MoMA, the Hammer Museum (Los Angeles), the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Albright-Knox Museum (Buffalo, New York), and numerous others.
